6 cabines - 2019
Sicily owes its reputation to the beauty of its natural sites, the Etna volcano, for example and its impressive coasts, lined with islands and islets. Easily accessible from the airports of Palermo (180 km) and Catania (150 km) by train or by highway, Portorosa is not only the perferct port of departure for the Aeolian islands, but also for various other destinations for weekly cruises. Alicudi, Filicudi, Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Stromboli, Vulcano are located only 25 miles away. 3 hours of sail away, you will find yourself in the middle of an archipelago of 7 islands to discover at will after having rented your yacht or booked your cabin cruise. As soon as you have hoisted the mainsail and unrolled the genoa, you will be able to see the red and black rocks as well as the Indian fig trees of Alicudi, the bushes of Corncrake and the « Grotte du Taureau Marin » of Filicudi, the sulphurous vapours of the Etna volcano, the bold headlands of Salina and the white beaches of Lipari ; further away, you will see the « Faraglioni » and the small houses typical of Panarea with the dantesque view of the Stromboli right in front of you.
On the west coast of Sicily, Marsala is a practical point of departure to visit the Egades islands, the Island of Pantelleria or Lampedusa and its seabed well suited for marine hunting.
Dainty and modern, the marina of Portorosa is found on the north coast of Sicily, in the gulf of Patti, between Capo Tindari and Capo Milazzo, only a few miles away from the Aeolian islands, 1h30 from the airport of Catania and 2h30 from that of Palermo.
The harbours of Tropea and Regio di Calabria in Italy are well located to set sail on the discovery of the Aeolian islands, the Strait of Messina and the eastern coast of Sicily (Taormina, Catania, Siracusa). Tropea and Reggio are easily accessible by plane from the internationa airport of Lamezia Terme.
The dominant winds in summer come from the north-west. The wind rises in the morning and blows at around force 3 to 4 to settle finally at night. It may sometimes blow from the south-west. The Sirocco, a strong south-easterly wind, may blow during spring. Tides and sea currents are practically non-existent, except in the Strait of Messina. The best months for the rental of a yacht or catamaran are from May to October.
The sailboats and catamarans are available for rent at the Marina of Portorosa, at Marsala, at Palermo or at the Marina di Ragusa (click on the map for further details) :
